Now that we have reached level 60, we could visit the Pet Trainer, and wipe our boars skill tree and replace it with something like: Rank 7 Growl, Rank 8 Bite, Rank 6 Charge, Rank 6 Natural Armour, Rank 10 Great Stamina, Rank 2 Natural Resistance. Working towards this as you level is good planning, however you will need different pet builds for things specific end game tasks like raiding, battlegrounds and dungeon farming. This beast should perform relatively well in most situations. Returning to our boar example, by the time we level to 60, a good build would be something like Rank 7 Growl, Rank 8 Bite, Rank 6 Charge, Rank 6 Natural Armour, Rank 8 Great Stamina, Rank 2 All Resistances. Remember that armor does nothing to stop spell damage, and resistances do nothing to stop physical damage.
They are heath boost, armor boost and the five magic resistances. These are the ones which need more thought, and will soak up the remaining talent points after you've picked which active skills you want your pet to have. Boars are great for leveling, and world PVP so bear that in mind when building this pet. If you are going to use Charge (and really you should, coz why else a boar) then you don't need to waste points on Dash.
These should likely be maxed to your pets current level if you are going to use them. Use accordingly to your taste/situation, bearing in mind that your pet can only have a maximum of four active abilities. These are typically specific to your pet family, and are either damage, or utility skills.

Second, an explanation on how to build pets would be a nice addition to the calculator, so new and inexperienced players can get an idea on how they should build their companions for different situations, such as leveling, tanking trash, specific boss mobs, raiding, and PVP. The Classic Hunter Pet system is very different than retail, and we've detailed all the intricacies, including feeding pets, pet stat modifiers, and unlocking ability ranks in our guide: The Classic Pet System is designed so you cannot have all max-rank abilities selected at once you don't have enough TP to spend. As you select each ability, your TP bar will fill up, and if you go over the allotted amount of points, it will turn red. The amount of points you have to spend depends on your pet's level and loyalty, which you can input through the two sliders at the top of the calc. Higher ranks have higher costs, which are indicated by the number in all the squares. When you select a pet family, you'll see all available Active and Passive abilities. With the calculator, you can get a quick idea of what abilities are available to each type of pet family and plan out your Classic builds.
